Where architecture meets engineering

The DV3x2 program through the American Institute of Architects gave me a rare glimpse into the intersection of architecture, engineering, and real-world business — an intersection I hadn't previously explored as a mechanical engineer in training.

My independent research project focused on UT Austin's financial structure: mapping revenue streams, analyzing budget allocation, and identifying the financial drivers behind one of the nation's largest public universities. This wasn't engineering in the traditional sense — but it demanded the same analytical rigor: gather data, identify patterns, draw defensible conclusions.

Working alongside startup architecture and engineering firms showed me how mechanical engineering principles manifest in construction — from the load-bearing logic of structural systems to the material science behind facade choices. The week compressed months of industry exposure into a single, high-intensity immersion.

Key contributions

  • Conducted an independent research project analyzing UT Austin's financial structure, including revenue sources, profitability, and budget allocation — strengthening financial analysis and data interpretation skills.
  • Gained hands-on exposure to the architecture and engineering industries by working directly with startup firms and exploring mechanical engineering principles in real-world design and construction settings.
  • Engaged in guided career exploration and self-reflection, ultimately reaffirming my primary interest in mechanical engineering through professional mentorship and applied learning experiences.
  • Observed how architectural decisions are governed by engineering constraints — and vice versa — deepening my understanding of multidisciplinary design.

This experience confirmed something important: mechanical engineers who understand architecture, finance, and systems-level thinking are far more effective than those who operate only within their specialty. The week pushed me to think broader — and I left more certain than ever that mechanical engineering is where I belong.
